Do you judge yourself?

Do you judge yourself?

“If you judge people you have no time to love them.” ~Mother Teresa

I recently shared a picture of Mother Teresa with this quote on my personal Facebook page. It touched my heart and apparently many others, as a few shared the photo from my post, many likes, and a comment or two. I never know what will grab the attention of my friends and family on Facebook, and quite frankly, I don’t put a lot of thought into it either. My posts happen by chance. When I have some time I will browse as far as I can through the many updates and newsfeeds, and if something touches my heart, I will share it. It could be something that resonated with me and in alignment with my understanding, thought provoking, something that made me giggle, or something simply beautiful.
Well this quote was something that resonated with me and simply beautiful. However, while I was running and processing a thousand different things I landed on this quote. And as I heard Mother Teresa’s words in mind, I recalled a presentation I did the other day to a woman’s group giving 7 non-traditional tips for a greater health and wellness story, and one of the tips was to “Fall in love with your life and with you”. I started thinking…”If I judge myself I have no time to love me”.

Wow! That was an awakening. I consciously work at not judging people, places or things. I try to learn from every opportunity and become more aware that difference doesn’t mean right or wrong, good or bad…it’s just different. The gift of freedom from this awareness is beyond words and I encourage you to try it on for size. Getting back to the point…Am I as accepting of myself as I am of others? This is definitely an area I am working on.

I ask you, “Do you judge yourself?”

I invite you to join me in becoming aware of judging yourself and instead of ruling right or wrong, good or bad, simply take it as information and do better next time.

Believing in the power of you!

What Are You Grateful For?

What Are You Grateful For?

Grateful to be able to breathe in and out on my own. . .

I have been journaling for over a decade and somewhere in each journal you will find “I am grateful for being able to breathe in and out on my own, walk and talk on my own and the ability to see, hear and feel”.

My level of gratitude for the seemingly simple things, things we take for granted, after surviving what seems like a nightmare, was deep and wide.

It’s not uncommon that we need to have something huge happen in our lives that reminds us how fortunate we really are.  For instance, when I made that first entry mentioned above I had just survived an incredibly abusive relationship.  I was grateful to my soul to have survived and not been maimed or even killed.  Yes, it was that bad.

It can also be small things that remind us.

Today a friend posted the question “What are you grateful for”, simple and straight forward.  The last couple of months have been taxing with shifting my focus from my comfort zone and creating a new brand.  Quite frankly, I hadn’t thought about gratitude in a while.

Then my sweet little angel voice in my head said “of course you are grateful”.  “You are grateful that you can breathe in and out on your own, and so on”.  And as I typed these words, the stress of the last few weeks welled up in my eyes, and I was able to truly exhale and put things in true perspective.

What came next was even more amazing.  A man who had been in a terrible accident and lucky to be alive, posted after me and said “I am thankful for those things too”.  He posted a picture of a mangled van that he had been in “by the grace of God, I survived this horrendous catastrophe.” his posting read.  I also saw pictures of him celebrating his life dressed to the nines with a cane supporting his weight and raising his video camera high in the air as if claiming his triumph.

I thanked him for reaffirming my gratitude and said a little prayer to always remember what truly matters and remember “I am grateful for being able to breathe in and out on my own, walk and talk on my own and the ability to see, hear and feel”.

What are you grateful for?   What really matters at the end of the day?

When life gets to you and it does – if only for a moment.  Anchor yourself in gratitude.  Get clear about what matters most and hold it to your heart to call on in those times.

You CAN do it!

YOU CAN DO IT! STOP TRYING AND JUST DO!

Stop trying and start doing when it comes to things that really matter to you.

How many times have you said I’ll try?  I’m going to try?

Words have energy.  Instead of “I’ll try my best” say, “I will do my best”?   Your chances of success just increased.

Trying is like saying:  Maybe I’ll commit.  Maybe I’ll have success.  Maybe…

I’m going to use weight loss as an example because it’s an area I know a lot about both personally and professionally.

Between you and me, how much weight have you lost “trying” to lose weight?  Are you at your goal?  Have you lost 20, 30, 50lbs or more and kept it off for 6 months or longer?  If so, CONGRATULATIONS!  You did it!   But I would be willing to bet you haven’t.  “I will try” is a huge predictor for failure.

Before you start another program to lose weight don’t try…do!

Start with listing what you know you can and will do.

I will drink 8 oz. of water every 2 hours

I will walk 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening no matter what

I will…

Not only will you be making progress in creating greater health, but you will be building your confidence.  Why?  When you are doing and not “trying”, you are committing and accomplishing.  Yes! You can do this!

Let’s try this with getting organized.  Eliminate try from the process and commit to only what you will do.  If you say I will try to get organized – you already have an out to not succeed.

I will touch junk mail only one time to move from mail box to recycle

I will choose a moment out of the week to process all incoming mail

I will take the extra milli-second to put my keys in the same exact spot when I walk in the door

I will hire a professional organizer to help me set up systems

Create your “I will do list” with only things you will commit to.  Remember this is not an “I will try” list.

Eliminate “try” as an option and see what you can accomplish.  You may be surprised!

How My love of Halloween Inspires Me

How My love of Halloween Inspires Me

From as far as I can remember I have loved Halloween.  So much so, I was willing to “off” a made up relative.  When I was in 6th grade our outdoor school was scheduled directly over my beloved holiday.  I made up a horrific lie and tried my best to get out of going.  The thought of not getting in costume, running the neighborhood and collecting my rewards in candy, was devastating. My teacher must not have believed my story because my mom marched me to school and I was outed.  I was sentenced to one week at Camp Harold.  I don’t really remember much about the week only that we watched The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and passed around skinned grapes for Ichabod’s eyes that were pulled from his skull and wet cooked spaghetti that was his guts, to celebrate on the night of Halloween.

I still get child like come the first day of September.  Then I feel within my rights to celebrate the season of Halloween. I start slowly with candles that smell  like pumpkin.  I start collecting little autumn like decorations that leans toward Halloween.  But most importantly is the joy I feel.  As I said, it’s child like.  It’s a magical time full of creativity and imagination that lends itself to all parts of my life.

Black cats, ghosts, bats, haunted houses, pumpkins, witches, I’ll love them all.

What triggers your inner child?  How do you get in touch with your creativity and imagination?

You want to make a big shift?  Find something that takes you back to when you weren’t so “figured out”, aka grown up.  Allow yourself space and grace to continue to develop into the person you are becoming. Be child like and look at life with curiosity and a sense of wonder.

Happy Halloween Season!
